Happy Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgivingkarte von Frances BrundageImage via Wikipedia
Tomorrow (November 25, 2010) is Thanksgiving Day in United States. Though we do not celebrate thanksgiving here in Nepal, we have a reason to celebrate because we will get a day off with from very busy work schedule. It is one among very few federal holidays in United States. If you would like to know something more about thanksgiving, below is some information regarding it.

Thanksgiving Day in United States is observed on the fourth Thursday in November which has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fish (cod, eels, and bass) and shellfish (clams, lobster, and mussels), wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans, and turkey), venison, berries and fruit, vegetables (peas, pumpkin, beetroot and possibly, wild or cultivated onion), harvest grains (barley and wheat), and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash.

In recent days during thanksgiving, families and friends usually gather for a large meal or dinner. Thanksgiving Eve, the night before the thanksgiving is one of the busiest nights for the bars and clubs and weekend is one of the busiest travel period of the year.

Day after Thanksgiving (BLACK FRIDAY)

The day after Thanksgiving is a day off for some companies and many schools. It is popularly known as Black Friday, because of the heavy shopping that day helps put retailers books back into black. Black Friday has been considered by retailers to be the start of the Christmas shopping season since as early as the 1930s.

|| बिजया दशमीको हार्दिक मंगलमय शुभ-कामना ||
Wishing you all a very
Happy Vijaya Dashami & Tihar

Though I know it is tough time for us, people in Medical Transcription field. Almost all the government and private companies will be closed by tomorrow, i.e. Thursday, October 14, 2010 (फुलपाति) till Friday, October 22, 2010 (कोज्रागत पुर्निमा) as we are observing the yearly biggest festival.
Most probably shifts will be started early to accomplish the day’s assignment earlier. Companies working from India or other vendor may request for lesser jobs for specific days though they won’t be minimizing remarkably. Even worse with the companies with direct clients who won’t be able to reduce at all. More to add trouble in, we can never be sure of the volume of job we get. If the volume gets high, …???
Thankfully this year the main day (बिजया दशमी) happened to fall on Sunday. And most of the transcription companies get lesser job volumes on Saturday. So I hope we all will have at least two days to enjoy.

College ends medical transcription program

Recently Delhi university announced it Medical transcription program for the first time for producing better transcriptionist India including South Asia.  In the mean time San Juan College is closing its medical transcription program stating that there is less room for advancement in the field.

Daily times cotes:

Fearing it may be preparing students for a diminishing profession, San Juan College will shut down its medical transcription program at the end of the school year.

Many health care professionals anticipate computer programs will soon replace medical transcriptionists.

The School of Health Sciences will focus on modernizing the coding and health information technologies degrees instead. Students with those degrees are qualified for better paying jobs, said Oliver Borden, the dean of the health sciences school.

"One of the reasons we're getting out of (medical transcription) is because there is less room for advancement" as medical transcriptionists, he said. "We're choosing to focus on a major that has the brightest future."

The 30 students currently enrolled in the medical transcription program have until the end of the school year to complete the two-semester program.

Medical transcriptionists have an average salary of $24,000 to $30,000 dollars per year, and there are few opportunities for earning a raise in that field, Borden said.

On the other hand, students who graduate with a health information technology degree from the college are more versatile, and if they turn their associate degree into a bachelor's and then a master's degree, their average salary would increase to $81,500, Borden said.

"It gives them a chance at life-long learning," he said. "There are stepping stones that are available."

Hospitals and health care providers are switching to electronic medical records and a new coding system, Borden said. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is predicting a 22-percent increase in jobs in the health care industry by 2018. The college is reshaping the health sciences school so students can get those jobs, Borden said.

Several local health care providers said in recent years they have outsourced medical transcription services or begun using computer programs for the service.

"It's cheaper and a lot faster," said Tabitha Joyce, the office manager for High Desert Rheumatology.

A year ago, High Desert Rheumatology and Internal Medicine started outsourcing medical transcription services to Intivia, a New Jersey-based company that uses a computer program to make transcriptions within 48 hours.  Read More...

Medical Transcription Industry Association Changes Name after 20 Years to Reflect Expanded Services in the Healthcare Marketplace

Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA), the world's largest association for medical transcription service organizations serving the needs of medical transcription companies, vendors, and health information management professionals, is changing its name to Clinical Documentation Industry Association (CDIA) after 20 years. The official press release states that the change name is a result of an effort to reflect not only the expanded scope of services its members provide to the healthcare industry, but also a more appropriate focus on the health record and its critical role in clinical decision-making and continuity of care.

About CDIA (formerly MTIA)

The Clinical Documentation Industry Association is a not-for-profit trade association serving the needs of medical transcription companies, vendors, and health information management professionals.

The CDIA began as a forum sponsored by the Health Professions Institute in 1989. The forum enabled medical transcription company owners and managers to discuss business issues, technology, and concerns unique to medical transcription business management.

At the time, MTSO members relied on the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT), an excellent source of information for individual transcriptionists, but the business professional needed an organization that represented the interests of medical transcription business owners and services.

Quality Assessment and Management Best Practices

The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity, American Health Information Management Association and Medical Transcription Industry Association have created a best practices document as a resource for establishing a comprehensive transcription quality assurance program for health care organizations.

Quality Assessment in Healthcare Documentaiton - Best Practices

-July 2010

  • Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (ahdi)
  • Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA)
  • American Health Information Management Association® (AHiMA)

Executive Summary

Technological advances combined with a national agenda for healthcare reform are shifting health information processes and practices from paper-based records to the electronic health record as the dominant medium by 2014. As this transformation takes place, the quality of patient records becomes a critical focus for patient safety and improved patient outcomes. Quality practices of both service providers as well as inhouse medical transcription departments benefit from a more standardized approach to measuring, reporting, and improving the quality of healthcare documentation in order to achieve consistent patient safety outcomes.

Due to the heightened pace of transition to electronic health records, the boards of directors of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), and the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) felt it was urgent to reassess the process of quality measurement in healthcare documentation. All three boards agreed to initiate a call to action to deliver on an updated best practices document for quality assessment in healthcare documentation. In April 2009, the directors called upon a workgroup of nationally recognized experts in health information, medical transcription, health information technology, and academia to convene a Quality Summit to develop best practices in quality assessment for healthcare documentation that would impact quality processes for the foreseeable future.

To achieve this task, the group first established the fundamental principles of quality. The workgroup then focused on factors that affect quality as well as strategies to minimize these factors. An in-depth analysis of blanks was also performed, as blanks are a critical factor in providing accurate patient reports. This Best Practices document applies the Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) method of continuous quality improvement. The PDCA approach to planning, decision-making, and problem solving is described in detail in Appendix C. The results of this committee’s work is described herein and provides a blueprint for the application of a leading-edge quality program that is compatible with paper-based medical records, hybrid EHR record systems, as well as fully implemented electronic health record systems.

There have been various issues, and opinions, regarding speech recognition software. Everyone knows it will make huge impact in transcription industry but no one is yet sure how huge will it be. Recent news from Cimo says:

New speech-recognition software, which transcribes lines of dictation that only require editing, was introduced in the fall of 2009. The software can produce more lines of dictation in less time using fewer people, according to Fletcher Allen. In addition, the provider stated it implemented an EHR system in June 2009, which allows physicians to enter information directly into the system without dictation; decreasing the overall volume of transcription work by 27 percent to date.
